Golf Swing Training Aid – Rope Drill

As you can see in the video below this is a simple easy to use golf swing training aid that can be used just about anywhere.

How To Build Your Golf Swing Training Aid

It’s also one of the least expensive golf swing training aids you can get your hands on. You can make it yourself for under $5 and a trip to the hardware store. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 36-40 inches of 1.5 inch thick nylon rope (other types work too if you have some rope laying around, but I recommend nylon if you are going to buy it new)
  • Duct Tape (or other sturdy tape)

They should cut the rope to the size you want at the hardware store. When you get home wrap each end a couple of time in tape (to keep in from unraveling). If 40 inches is too long trim it a bit and re-tape the end. It’s really that easy.

This simple DIY golf training aid will teach you to start both your back-swing and your down-swing with your core, not your arms and wrists. In addition it teaches you to not “cast” or throw away the club head with your wrists.

How To Use The Rope Training Aid

The only trick to using this training aid is that you have to get the rope swinging a bit before you take it back. So swing it forward a bit then make your back-swing.

If you release your wrists (cast) before impact it will make the rope slap you on the back instead of wrap around your gently in the finish. This is great feed back. If you are doing it wrong you’ll know it.

When done properly the rope should gently wrap around your body in the back-swing, straighten out like a rod at the moment that would be impact (if a ball was there), and finally wrap around your body in the finish.

If you do this properly the rope actually stiffens enough to hit a golf ball (not very far but a cool trick).

Go out and give this golf swing training aid a try. Your core and your handicap will thank you.
