Spring Load your Golf Swing For Longer Drives


In many ways the golf swing is like a spring. You load it up in the back swing and unload it in the downswing. You see, the real power in a golf swing doesn’t come from swinging your arms at the ball, instead it comes from unloading the “springs” in few key places of the body. When you unload those “springs” properly you develop the kind of raw power that results in longer straighter drives. When you do this right your arms are just along for the ride.

As PGA Pro Bill McKinney explains in the video above there are several places where you can build tension in your back swing that will store power to be released into the ball during impact. Let’s start from the ground and work our way up.

The first “spring” is your rear foot. With your rear foot firmly planted on the ground you can build power by simply resisting the rotating force of the backswing that tries to rotate your foot outward.

The next “spring” is your rear leg and knee. By moving your knee slightly outward while keeping your rear foot firmly planted you can store more energy for the downswing. As you saw in the video it’s not a big movement, but it adds a lot of power. And when you do it right you can certainly feel the tension.

Your rear glute and hip are the next “spring” that you need to load. By rotating backwards on your rear hip (this is different than rotating your core/waist) you add another layer of power.

You’ve most likely heard about loading your core in the backswing, it’s the next “spring” you’ll want to wind up. This one is pretty simple, rotating your spine in the backswing like you are trying to see what is behind you without moving your feet adds even more power to your swing. While loading the core is by far the biggest movement in this loading sequence, the other “springs” are what give the core the foundation it needs to develop serious power. Without the right foundation loading your core might as well be like bending a wet noodle.

Last but not least is your front shoulder; it’s the last “spring” in the sequence. By keeping your front arm extended for as long as possible in the back swing you add some major power to your swing. If you allow your front arm to fold too soon this spring never gets loaded.

When you load all these springs your golf swing turns into a drawn bow, ready to release its stored energy and send the arrow (golf ball in this case) hurling down range.

Releasing all these springs is the easy part, as long as you don’t over think it or try to get your arms involved.

Are you adding strokes to your score before you even tee up a ball?


By using the tee box strategically you can easily save yourself 7-10 strokes per round. How is that possible? It’s quite simple really, and it depends on whether your ball flight is naturally a fade, a draw, or the ever so illusive straight shot. Your typical ball flight should determine whether you tee up on the right side of the tee box, the left side of the tee box, or the center of the box. This allows you to use the whole fairway to your advantage, here’s how…

If you normally hit a fade and tee up in the center of the tee box aiming straight down the middle of the fairway, the chances of you landing on the left half of the fairway is virtually non-existent. The chances of you fading the ball a bit too much is probably not that uncommon and will land you in the rough. You are essentially giving up half of the fairway for no good reason.

The same is true for those with a draw, except they are giving up the right half of the fairway when they tee up in the center of the box. There is absolutely no reason to do this. Don’t just jump out of the cart and tee up your ball anywhere on the tee box, ball placement on the tee box matters, so play to your strengths.

If you hit a fade (for a right hander) you should be teeing up your ball on the right side of the tee box and aiming at the left side of the fairway. The result: If you happen to hit is straight, no big deal your on the left side of the fairway. If you hit your typical fade your smack dab in the center. And if your fade turns into a small slice your much more likely to wind up on the right side of the fairway than in the rough.

Pretty simple right?

The opposite is true for a draw, you’ll want to line up on the left side of the box and aim at the right side of the fairway.

Remember golf is a game of skill, but also of strategy. Nobody has a perfect swing. Great golfers are the ones who use strategy to work the ball around the course with the swing they have.

Tee box position is not a decision to go “brain-dead” on. It matters a whole lot, and ignoring it can land you in the junk all day long. This simple strategy can save you some serious grief and a lot of strokes. Who knows you might even pick up a few more skins through out day…

High shots – Hybrids Hit Like a 9 Iron on Steroids


Making unexpected shots will take your golf game to the next level. To make these shots you need to know what you, and your clubs, are capable of. By thinking outside of the box you can easily get out of many tricky situations around the golf course and save par.

In the video above Golf Pro Bill McKinney shows you how a hybrid golf club can get you up and over a tree that’s right in front of you, and still have enough carry to reach a green that is 170 yards away.

Normally in a situation like this, most golfers would choose to get over the tree with a 9 iron, sacrificing distance and their chance to make it to the green. This is a safe shot, but there is another option. A club like a #5 Hybrid has enough loft to get over the tree and will give you the extra carry you need to make it to the green.

The secret here is knowing what your clubs are capable of, but also spending time on the range experimenting with different shots. For this shot you simply need to make a shorter quicker swing. By tweaking your normal swing just a bit you can turn your #5 hybrid into a 9 iron on steroids. You’ll be able to clear the tree without sacrificing your score on the hole.

The best part is, if you practice these kinds of specialty golf shots, they won’t even seem risky when you use them on the course, it’ll be business as usual. And did I mention hitting these shots is a lot of fun.

Golf Tip – Secret to Ben Hogan’s Waggle


Hey fellow golf nuts, Doc here with a short but sweet tip for you this week.

As you probably know a good pre-shot routine is crucial if you want to play great golf, all the golfers on the tour have a pre-shot routine and so should you. But I’ve noticed a lot of guys omit one very important part of the pre-shot routine, the waggle.

The waggle does some amazing things for your golf swing and skipping it is just plain madness. Once you realize all the good stuff the waggle does for your golf game you’ll never skip it again.

As Bill McKinney explains in the video the waggle does 5 important things for your golf swing. First, it rehearses you swing path. By moving the club along the proper path you are reminding yourself seconds before you swing where the right path is.

Next, it reminds your wrists how to cock at the top of the swing. A good waggle also reminds your wrists how to release into impact.

The waggle also helps you feel the right amount of tension in your arms and wrists, remember your arms and wrists should be loose and your grip just tight enough to hang onto the club. If you have too much tension you’ll quickly realize it when you waggle and be able to correct it before it ruins a shot.

Lastly, a good waggle gives you some rhythm, and keeps you from stiffening while standing over the ball. As Bill McKinney explains in the video, the rhythm aspect to the waggle is very similar to a baseball player rhythmically moving the bat before each swing. Starting a swing from a stagnant position nearly always results in a jerking motion, it’s just how our muscles work, but if we are already moving we can be incredibly precise and smooth.

How can something as simple as a waggle help so much? The simple answer is that it force feeds your brain very detailed information about where the ball is. That’s why it’s so important to waggle with precision. A sloppy waggle can be worse that no waggle at all.

How does the waggle force feed your brain information? Our brains have two ways of knowing where something is, sight and feel. Sight is pretty simple, look down at the ball. The feel however is a bit different. You can’t reach down and touch the ball with your hand in golf, instead you have to learn to use the club as an extension of your hand.

This is obviously a bit more difficult, that’s where the waggle comes in. Instead of putting the club head right behind the ball once (which tells the feeling part of your brain where that ball is), the waggle allows you to send that message to your brain two or three times in a row, really cementing the feeling of where the ball is into your mind. When you have both sight and feeling working properly you’re much more likely to hit the ball crisp and clean. That’s how something as simple and easy as a waggle can help eliminate fat and thin shots, without actually changing you natural swing.

Golf’s “Toughest Shot” made Easy: Conquer the Long Bunker


We’ve all been there, staring down 20 yards of sand followed by a mere 5 yards of green before the pin. You know what happens next, either you use your normal sand wedge shot hoping it’ll land just at the start of the green without rolling too far from the pin, or you decide to play it safe and simply over shoot the pin simply hoping to stay on the green.

Neither option is very good. In the first instance you’ll most likely hit it short with another bunker shot to follow. And in the second option a double bogie is all too likely.

Long Bunker Shots Don’t Have To Be Hard.

That’s right, with the right club these shots are quite simple. For these situations you need a shot that is all flight and little or no roll. That means high loft and tons of back spin. With this combination you can swing aggressively (with none of the decelerating or hesitation that always leads to mishaps) and give yourself an easy par, maybe even a birdie putt if your game is on. The simple fact is you will rarely practice these long bunker shot often enough nail down the kind of precision required to get it right, if you’re using a sand wedge. Turbo Charge Your Golf Swing: What pitchers know that you don’t…

Hey it’s Doc again with yet another no-cost video lesson to help you crush more long, gorgeous drives.

This week I want to talk about your right elbow, more specifically how getting your right elbow in the right spot during the downswing can add power and distance to your golf drives.

Bill McKinney’s baseball analogy in the video above is probably the best way I’ve ever heard this golf tip explained, that’s why I’m sharing it with you today. We’ve all seen those dramatic Sports Illustrated shots of a baseball pitcher just before he releases the ball with his hand so far behind his elbow it looks physically impossible. Pretty Impressive.

What does that have to do with golf? Well great pitchers and great golfers both know that they can maximize their speed by tucking their right elbow before the moment of truth. Why does this work for golf? Without getting into complex physics it basically loads up power in your swing. The more bent and pulled into your body your right elbow is, and the longer you can hold that position before impact, the more power you have to release right when you hit the ball.

When you tuck your elbow properly it’s like a loaded spring.

You may be thinking to yourself, well that’s great, but how the heck do I naturally get my elbow bent into my body like that? The answer is that although it looks awkward in slow motion it’s actually pretty easy to do when you are swinging.

However, if it doesn’t come naturally or you are having a hard time developing a feel for it you can have a buddy do what Billy is doing in the video with the student. By lightly grabbing a hold of the club as the student starts his downswing, Billy is forcing him to pull the club down and inward toward his body. In order to do this you will naturally tuck that right elbow into your body.

If you don’t have anyone willing to do this for you that’s okay, there’s a simpler way. To do this without a partner simply think about pulling the handle of the golf club downward and in toward your body from the top of your downswing. Just remember it’s not a jerking motion.

2 Simple Steps To Longer Drives



To get the most distance out of your drives you want to make sure you are making contact with the right spot on your driver. Everyone has heard of the sweet spot on the golf club, but you may have never heard of the hot spot.

The hot spot is a relatively new term that really only applies to the big drivers on the market today. If you have a driver with a large club face hitting the sweet spot of the club will certainly produce a great drive, but make contact a little higher up and you will get even more distance out of your golf drives.

As Bill McKinney said in the video hitting the hot spot gives you a higher launch angle and less back spin. Both of these equate to more distance. The trouble is without a long tee you won’t be able to hit the hot spot. So do yourself a favor and get some taller tees. You’ll be able to maximize your swing and your equipment for longer drives.

There is a bit of a trick to using longer tees. Luckily I’ve got a video that explains this trick and how to get those long tees working for you. You can see it right here (Tee it High).

The other thing that will boost your drives is making sure your spine is tilted back during impact. At address your spine should be straight, but during your downswing your upper body should be behind your hips.

Having your torso tilted back improves the launch angle of your drives even more, and it also reduced backspin on the ball.

These two tips combined should have you hitting longer drives in no time. So go hit the range before you next round and see if you can work these tips into your swing.

Golf Tip – 50 yard Sand Shots: Never be stuck in No Man’s Land Again


We all know those medium distance bunker shots can kill your golf score. There is a real trick to mastering these shots, so I got Bill McKinney to put those secrets on tape so you no longer have to suffer a bogey or worse when you find yourself in a bunker that’s 50 or so yards from the green.

As you can see in the video you can’t use your normal “green-side bunker” golf swing, or your normal “fairway bunker” swing on these medium distance bunker shots. They just won’t work.

For these ~50yd bunker shots you need to use a compact half swing to get the ball onto the green. You also want to use a club with as little loft as necessary to get the ball over the lip of the bunker.

This means you probably won’t be using a sand wedge or lob wedge. In the video Bill is using a gap wedge. You can easily hit a 50 yard shot with a half swing with a gap wedge. If you use a sand or lob wedge you will need to swing much harder increasing the chances of a miss-hit.

Using a half swing allows you to be very relaxed and methodical focusing on not hitting the shot fat, instead of worrying about swinging hard enough to get the ball to the green. You will also want to line up with the ball in the middle of your stance and choke down a bit on whatever golf club you choose.

The other key to hitting this golf shot is not hitting behind the ball. Unlike a green-side bunker shot (one that’s right next to the green) you don’t want to hit the sand first. If you do the ball will never make it to the green. Instead you want a nice clean shot where you strike the ball first, then the sand.

To practice this I suggest doing what Bill has done in the video. Draw a line in the sand perpendicular to your target line. Set several golf balls just in front of that line. Then take a few practice swings, using the line to see if you are hitting the shot fat (your divot starts behind the line) or if you are hitting them clean (your divot starts after the line).

A great way to avoid hitting behind the ball is to focus on the top of the ball or the top front of that ball as you swing.

As always you want to keep your hands ahead of the ball through impact.

Secret To Shaping Shots



Learning how to shape golf shots will help you get around the course much easier. Using a hybrid golf club is a great way to teach yourself how to shape shots. Because these clubs are easy to hit, it takes much of the frustration out of the process.

Start off with the easiest way to shape shots, trajectory control. Trajectory control is as simple as moving the ball around in your stance. To hit a low golf shot simply play the ball back towards your back foot. To hit a high golf shot play the ball more off your front foot.

When shaping the trajectory of your golf shots you also want to make sure you are paying attention to your hands. You don’t need to scoop the ball to hit it high. Your hands should still be in front of the ball at impact, but with as little forward shaft lean as possible (depending on how high you want to hit it).

For a low golf shot you will want a lot of forward shaft lean. This takes loft away from the club keeping the ball lower.

Now for the fun part, hitting fades and draws. As Bill McKinney shows in the video above hitting a hook or draw is simply a matter of swinging inside-out and “wrapping the toe around the golf ball.” You will also want to line up your stance to the right of your target. This type of swing is much like curving a table tennis shot. Cut across the ball to the right and the ball goes left, and visa versa.

To hit a fade golf shot or a slice you do the opposite. Align your stance to the left of the target and swing from the outside-in cutting across the ball. Also remember to keep the club face square into your follow through, closing the club face will take some of the spin off the ball. By doing these three things you will cause the ball to curve to the right.

The last segment of the video shows you the practical ways you can use these techniques on the golf course. Imagine the green was directly behind the tree in the video. Without being able to shape golf shots (or have pinpoint accuracy and hit between the branches) you would have to hit left or right of the green and take another shot to get on. Knowing how to shape shots would allow you to go for the green saving you a stroke.

Hybrid clubs make shaping shots much easier because they are so forgiving. If you don’t own any already I would recommend picking up a set. Turn Every Golf Club Into Three With Trajectory Control

Learning to control the trajectory of your golf shots is crucial if you want to take your game to the next level.

Trajectory control is one of the ways you can quickly multiply the number of clubs in your bag. Just think about it, if you can hit all of your clubs at three distinct trajectories it’s effectively like tripling the number of clubs in your bag.

As Bill McKinney showed you in the video changing the trajectory is as simple as moving the ball around in your stance and moving your hands more or less forward at impact.

To lower the trajectory of a golf shot (keep the ball flight lower) simply move the ball back a bit in your stance, and increase the forward shaft tilt at impact (move your hands ahead of the club head and ball). Both of these changes take loft away from the club.

A low trajectory shot is great for staying under trees, cutting through the wind, or getting more roll out of the shot.

To increase the trajectory of a golf shot (get the ball higher in the air) you want to play the ball forward in your stance. At impact you want less forward shaft tilt (although your hands still need to be a bit ahead of the ball and club head). You still want to maintain a flat left wrist, even for a high trajectory golf shot.

For these high trajectory golf shots you will be striking the ball right at the bottom of the swing arc. This means that you will take little to no divot on the shot.

This shot will feel more like you are sweeping the ball up. However you don’t want to try to flick the ball into the air, you must remember to stay down through the shot.

High trajectory golf shots are great for getting over trees or getting less roll from a shot.

Perfect Your Ball Striking With This Simple Drill


Just so there is no confusion, this golf drill it is not meant for practicing bunker shots. This drill is geared toward improving your ball striking for golf shots off of grass.

This golf drill will teach you to strike the ball more cleanly. By practicing in the sand you are able to see exactly where your club first touches the ground in relation to the golf ball. This will really help you dial in your swing.

During normal practice off of grass it is difficult to tell whether or not you are striking the ball cleanly, because after you swing the ball is long gone and you have no reference point to compare your divot to.

As you saw in the video when you practice this drill in the sand you can draw a line, place the ball just ahead of it, make your shot and get instant feedback from your swing. After you take a few shots you will know right away if you were are a little ahead or behind the ball.

Ideally you want to strike the golf ball first then the ground, so your divot should start right after the line you drew in the sand. Your divot should never start in front of the line (that would be a fat shot). If your divot starts before the line you know you need to adjust your swing.

The length of your divot is also important. This is where the sand really helps out. Since grass is resilient it will only take a divot where you make hard contact. Soft contact simply scuffs the grass.

Sand on the other hand will tell you exactly how long you were contacting the ground. A long divot means that you have a good follow through and are maintaining proper wrist conditions through impact.

If your divot is short you need to work on staying down through all your shots. Try focusing on having a flat left wrist through impact, and carry that wrist position as long as you can into your follow through.

Secret To Low Powerful Golf Punch Shots



As you saw in the video the secret to a low power shot is to have a large amount forward shaft lean. This takes some of the loft off of the golf club keeping the ball flight low.

This type of shot can be used in many different ways. It’s pretty common to use a 4 iron for this kind of shot but other clubs work in different situations.

You can use a half swing and get a small 50 to 75 yard golf shot with a low short flight and a really long roll, or you can use a full swing and like Bill said in the video get up to 200 yards out of it (which will also be low and have a long roll).

The bottom line is that this is a very versatile golf shot, one every golfer should know. It can really save you if you wind up in the trees or on the edge of the fairway where you need to keep the ball low to clear overhanging branches.

Aside from being able to use this shot to get out of trouble it will also help you train your hands to stay in front of the ball at impact.

This kind of low power shot simply exaggerates the forward shaft lean to keep the golf ball low. If you have trouble getting your hands to stay in front of the ball or can’t seem to keep your left wrist flat at impact this is a great shot to practice.

By exaggerating forward shaft lean with this golf shot you will get the feel for where you hands should be during impact on a normal shot (sometimes exaggerating something is the best way to get a feel for it).

If you play around with this technique you will also find that you can start controlling the height of all your golf shots by simply changing the amount of forward shaft lean.

Find Your Driver’s “Hot Spot” For Added Distance Off The Tee

Aligning the driver directly behind a teed up golf ball is one of the most common mistakes when it comes to teeing the ball high. This is why many golfers avoid long tees. Once you understand this little secret it will open up a whole new world of distance for you. This one trick alone can get an extra 20 to 40 yards out of your driver.

I recommend using 3 inch tees. Here’s what you need to do:

Tee the golf ball up with a 3 inch tee. Align yourself to the ball without letting the club rest on the ground. Make sure your arms are fully extended (like they would be at impact). The ball should be at the center of the club.

Now relax your wrists and arms letting the club rest on the ground. Notice that the ball is now aligned to the toe of the club, that’s okay because like you saw in the video your arms will lengthen at impact putting the ball right where it should be.

The key to this trick is that the sweet spot on drivers isn’t where it used to be. New golf driver technology and the massive club faces found on modern drivers have moved the “hot spot” higher up on the face of the club.

I use the term “hot spot” because when I talk about the sweet spot most people are thinking about the spot smack-dab in the center of the club face. The center of the club face isn’t a bad place to be hitting, but on most new drivers hitting a little above the center will actually get you more distance.

This is why using a longer tee is so important. Without the golf ball sitting up higher off the ground it is pretty much impossible to access the “hot spot” on the club face.

In addition to hitting the “hot spot,” teeing the ball higher brings your swing plane closer to the horizontal axis. The driver swing is already much more horizontal than an iron swing because of the long shaft. Teeing the golf ball up an inch higher brings it even closer to horizontal.

Why is this good for you? Well many (actually most) golfers tend to hit at least a slight slice with their drivers. A sliced golf shot can be caused by two things: an open club face, or an outside in (sometimes called coming over the top) swing path.

The closer your swing plane is to the horizontal axis the more difficult it becomes to swing outside in.

So in addition to helping you hit longer drives, teeing the ball up higher can actually help to fix your slice. All you have to do is remember to address the shot with the golf ball toward the toe of the driver, it’s that simple.

Unorthodox Golf Drill Cures One Sided Golfers


Not only does this drill look really cool it can actually help improve your golf game in a big way. This golf drill allows you to train both sides of your body and your hand eye coordination at the same time.

It is similar to the one handed chip shot. The one handed chip shot forces you to use both sides of your body properly if you want to make a clean shot. It exposes weakness in your swing that your strong side may be compensating for.

The drill in the video above also exposes weaknesses in one side of your body or the other. Mastering this drill will not only amaze your buddies, it will also sharpen your golf skill tremendously. Your hands will be forced to get into the right position for impact every time you swing the golf club. Training with this drill will make proper wrist conditions (flat left wrist, bent right wrist) second nature.

This golf drill will also improve your hand eye coordination. Luckily the ball doesn’t move when we address it on the course, but your body is constantly moving during the golf swing. Although we don’t often think about this it requires a lot of hand eye coordination.

Developing good enough hand eye coordination to be able to hit the golf ball after turning and twisting our bodies in the back swing is something that we learn very quickly. However, developing the razor sharp hand eye coordination that will allow you to hit the right spot on the golf ball every swing, regardless of course conditions, is something that many golfers never achieve.

This is exactly the kind of drill that fine tunes your hand eye coordination taking your golf game to the next level, and like I said above it educates your hands at the same time.

So go out there and try this drill. If you can get half as good as Bill McKinney at this drill I guarantee that your ball striking skills will improve and your golf scores will start dropping.

Loading Your Golf Driver Shaft For Massive Power


Getting your driver shaft to flex properly is one of the best ways to add major distance to your golf drives.

Golf club shafts are meant to flex in the down swing. This flex stores a ton of energy (like an archer pulling the string back on his bow). When that flex releases at the right point (at impact) you will be able to launch the ball much further than you would if you were to rely on swing speed alone.

The key to getting this flex to work for you is choosing the right kind of shaft. As you probably know golf shafts come in a variety of flex levels. They range from junior to double extra stiff like Bill is using in the video.

Just as he says you need to find the right shaft for you. If you are young flexible and consider yourself to have a fast swing, a stiff shaft may be right for you. If you are a bit older and not quite as limber as you were in your younger days, you may want to get a medium flex shaft or senior flex so that you can properly load the shaft (and still out gun the younger guys).

Now for the technique shown in this video:

Loading on plane means that you are not getting all whacky with your golf swing when you are trying to flex the shaft. Staying on plane is crucial. The key is using your base (feet, knees, and hips) to stress the shaft.

By having a strong weight shift on your down swing you are able to put enough torque on the shaft to load it without jerking down from the top or getting off plane.

Once you have the shaft loaded you need to keep it loaded until impact. If you “cast” or release your wrists before impact you will lose all that stored power in the shaft (not to mention you won’t have proper wrist conditions at impact).

To keep the shaft loaded you have to use your core pivot to drive the swing all the way THROUGH impact. Your arms simply won’t be able to keep the shaft flexed on their own. Now go out and try this technique yourself.
